No. 534.

Sir,
GOVERNMENT HOUSE,
HONG KONG.
26th October, 1933.
I have the honour to inform you that
during the night of September 22nd, a safe in the
General Post Office was opened by a person or persons
unknown, and cash and stamps to the value of $1,589.09
were removed.
2.
The safe in question is one used by the
shroffs engaged in selling stamps for keeping cash
and stamps over night. During the day the safe is
empty and it would appear that in the past no special
precautions were taken to secure that unauthorised
persons did not have access to the key with the consequent risk of a duplicate being made. This has since been
remedied.
3.
It is thought probable that the thieves
concealed themselves in the building, opened the safe
by means of a duplicate key, and left when the doors
were opened in the morning.
The premises are searched
nightly but it would not be impossible for anyone familiar with the building to evade notice; for this
and other reasons it is suspected that the theft may
have been committed with the connivance of a member
